The Fur Baby First Aid Challenge: Would You Know What to Do?

A friend shared information about the American Red Cross Cat and Dog First Aid course, and it stopped me in my tracks.

I travel with three wiener dogs and one Maine Coon. I love my fur babies dearly, but if one of them experienced a medical emergency while we were on the road, would I truly know what to do until we reached a veterinarian?

Truck drivers can be hundreds of miles from home, unfamiliar with the area, and nowhere near an emergency veterinary clinic. Many of us also travel with multiple fur babies. Knowing a few basic first-aid skills could make a real difference during those critical first minutes.

The American Red Cross offers a self-paced online Cat and Dog First Aid course. It costs $25, takes approximately 35 minutes, and covers subjects such as vital signs, breathing and cardiac emergencies, wounds, bleeding, seizures, and preventive care.
