What the Mirror Taught Me

There’s something about a truck mirror that people outside this life will never fully understand.

It’s not just there so you can change lanes safely.

It’s not just equipment.

It’s perspective.

Five years ago, I snapped this photo without thinking too much about it.

A truck.

A sunset.

A quick driver selfie in the reflection.

Simple.

But looking at it now… I see something different.

I see a version of me who was still figuring things out.

Still learning how to carry the weight of this industry.

Still building confidence mile by mile.

Still learning that this career asks more of you than most people will ever realize.

And what stands out most?

I wasn’t looking forward when I took that picture.

I was looking back.

Not in regret.

Not stuck in the past.

Just aware.

Because in trucking…

you learn real quick that what’s behind you matters just as much as what’s ahead.

The loads you’ve hauled.

The storms you’ve driven through.

The breakdowns you’ve worked through.

The commitments you kept—even when it would’ve been easier not to.

That’s what builds a driver.

The road ahead will always demand something from you.

There’s always another load.

Another deadline.

Another decision to make.

But the mirror?

That’s where you see proof.

Proof that you’ve handled hard days before.

Proof that you’ve figured things out when it mattered.

Proof that you didn’t quit.

And sometimes… that’s exactly what you need.

Not more pressure to keep going.

Just a reminder that you already have.

The road will always move forward.

But every now and then…

it’s worth checking the mirror—

just to remind yourself how far you’ve already come.
